Calling Christian Mentors!

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. (1 Peter 5: 1-4, NIV)

There is a great need in today’s church for Christian mentors.  As a single parent, I know first-hand how desperately young men need seasoned Christian men to come along side them and help them in their walk with Christ and their journey to becoming a man.

Further, Christian women can also come alongside the single mother, providing support, a listening ear, a tender heart, and an example of a Godly woman.

God clearly commands His people to mentor – to be examples to the flock.  And He says He wants them to WANT to do it…not HAVE to do it.

But where are they?  Where are the elders that we so desperately need?I know I would find a Christian man that would mentor my son invaluable!

Understandably, there is some hesitation on the part of the church, considering the single mother is, obviously, single.  Yet, it is a true misconception of married women that single mothers are forever on the hunt for a husband….even if he is already your husband.  Many single mothers have already pushed their romantic life to the side in order to provide all they possibly can for their children.  Furthermore, with much prayer and careful planning, even those with such plans can be thwarted.

God tells His people over and over in His word to, “Learn to do right; seek justice.  Defend the oppressed; take up the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.”

In Psalm 68:5 (NIV), David describes God as “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows…”  God clearly has a special place in His holy heart for children without fathers.  He even goes so far as to say, “Leave your orphans; I will protect their lives.”  (Jeremiah 49:11a, NIV)

Hopefully, the men of God will have His heart for children of single parents and come to their rescue…

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (Deuteronomy 6:5-6, NIV)
