30 days of Praying for My Child

Day 12 – Praying for My Child

sons and daughters

I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.  Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.

Psalm 2:7-8

Genetics is an interesting thing.  There are things that I see in my son that are all me, and things that I see that are 100% his father.  From both sides, some of those things are negative and some positive.

Research shows us that genetics are powerful – and we may not be able to overcome them.  For instance, twins separated at birth and raised in very different families still seem to have similar characteristics…and I am not talking about physical characteristics…we can plainly see that.  I mean the characteristics that shape who we are – that give us our talents, personalities, temperaments, and outlooks.  According to science, we are stuck with what we have.  How depressing.

I may not know a ton about the Bible – as I always say, I am no Biblical scholar. However, I do know that through Christ, we are never, ever stuck.  The verse above is the Lord talking to Jesus, but there are many, many verses that tell us we have the inheritance given to Christ.

Galatians 3”29 clearly states this: If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

We are, for all intents and purposes, the genetic seed of Abraham if we have Jesus.  That means, genetically, we come from a different line – a chosen line – a holy line.

Hallelujah!

That is really good news for me, and great news for my son! All the mess that he genetically inherited from his father and me…all the generations of messes that we brought together in this one child, can be changed, just like that, with a faith in Jesus Christ.

This is not some silly or mystical notion – this is Biblical.  We see this stated again and again:

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. (2 Peter 1:3-4)

Galatians 3:26 puts it simply:  So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith

So, Lord,

The prayer for my son today is that You simply hold true to these promises, which I have no doubt You will.

We do not deserve You, Lord, yet You gave us Your own son so that we might become Your sons and daughters. Thank You, Lord.

Please, Lord, let my son fully understand this concept – that he is now Your son – that his father and I are here to take care of him on this earth, but that You are his true inheritance.  You have given him all the love and power of Jesus Christ.  How amazing, Lord!

Thank You, Lord…thank You.  Please Lord, cleanse from my son all the shortcomings of his earthy inheritance…all the wrong that was put in him through the lineage of his earthly parents and fill him with Your holy lineage.  Remind him daily, Lord, of the power in him through You.  Let him never stop praising You Jesus.

Amen.
